This is needed, because otherwise other tools/libs like libplot (imagemagick too?) won't be callable. The libs might be also used by python extensions, so make shure that every part is compiled with -fPIC. BTW: It's hard to get rid of the docs :)

That was my first thougt too (and the reason behind the 'It's hard to get rid of the docs' remark). No, --enable-docs=no just inhibits (re-)building of some latex stuff, but the rest gets installed.

Sorry for introducing the shared libs again. I've tried some static variants, but
inkscape kept failing when it came to the tex stuff :(
